Having literally just returned to the station from a fire, Brian Humphrey of the LA Fire Department treated Blog Council members to a detailed call about how the department has utilized social media to build a presence that goes way beyond the borders of Los Angeles.
Realizing that he did not have readily-available access to update the main web site, Brian has utilized cheap and simple-to-implement Web technologies to create a powerful social media platform:
- Blog (the LAFD uses Blogger)
- Widgets
- Yahoo! Pipes
- Mobile Alerts
- Mashups with Google Maps
One of Brian’s key lessons was about ROI and metrics, or he calls them, “milestones of success” for the program:
- Desirable
- Beneficial
- Justifiable
- Sustainable
Thanks, Brian! We salute you for your service and for your social media prowess.
Note: Brian was also profiled in last month’s WIRED.
These sort of Blog Council calls are member-only. If you’re interested in joining the Blog Council and participating, we’d love to have you on board! Give us a shout.
