The adoption curve for big businesses and social media

Maxine Teller has created a thought-provoking methodology describing the various phases that organizations go through when engaging in social media. She calls her chart the Social Media Adoption Curve and covers the journey from the initial education stage up to the collaboration stage.

Crucial to this progression, Maxine highlights two key points she dubs “mindshifts:”

  • Mindshift 1: The transition between broadcast and participation, when communication moves from 1-way to 2-way.
  • Mindshift 2: The progression from the relationships stage to the collaboration stage, where organizations move from “taking value” to “sharing value.”
