Research: Social media users have stronger personal networks than non-users

While critics of social media often suggest that it results in emotional isolation and less social interaction, a new report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project finds the opposite.

Their report, “Social Isolation and New Technology,” finds that people’s discussion networks (defined as “those with whom people discuss important matters) are 9% larger for users who share photos online and 9% larger for users of instant messaging applications.

The study also found that those who use mobile phones and basic internet have more diverse “core networks” of close friends, family, and confidants.
