Social media research: Mobile social networking up 187% since July 2008

18.3 million users are now using social networks from their smartphones, representing a 187% increase since last July, according to recent study by Nielsen. Many are migrating to mobile-only social networks, including mig33, peperonity and MocoSpace, the most popular mobile site and now available in 22 cities.

About 65 million of Facebook’s 300 million users, as well as roughly 25 million of MySpace’s estimated 125 worldwide members, are mobile users. Among young adults (18-34 years old), 80% call their wireless phone their “lifeline” to others.
