Survey: 79% of students consider social networking sites crucial to employers engaging with them

October 1, 2009

According to a survey by TMP WorldWise and Targetjobs, students are actively using social media networks to research companies and also discuss whether corresponding brand messages ring true.

“Today’s students use these sites as trusted places to not only communicate with friends but to also investigate potential employers; so businesses simply cannot underestimate the power of social media when it comes to brand building and engaging with undergraduates,” TMP Worldwide Head of Planning and Research Neil Harrison said.

The survey also revealed the following:

  • 56% say social networking websites give candidates a better feel for company culture
  • 42% of students believe social media is “the ideal platform” to communicate about brands
  • 30% of those surveyed speak with current employees about how their expectations have been met since being hired
