Corporate Social Media Case Study: Buy.com

Buy.com initiated a scavenger hunt, “Tweet n Seek,” that led participants across several of their websites and social media networks. The contest began with a Twitter update from the company’s account (@buy_com) and directed participants to several product pages of the company’s site. Once there, contestants looked for clues and entered to win by posting the answers to the company’s Facebook page.

The hunt made fans familiar with the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and the promise of similar future events means people are likely to follow and friend the company so that they don’t miss out next time.

Corporate Social Media Case Study: Dunkin’ Donuts

Dunkin’ Donuts is asking fans to submit ideas for a new doughnut concept and to vote for their favorites online. Participants build their donut from scratch, name it, list the ingredients, and write a summary on the inspiration behind it. The contest has been narrowed to a dozen entries, and while visitors can still design their own, contest submissions have been closed for final voting.

The twelve finalists will all be awarded a cash prize and flown to Braintree, MA to participate in a doughnut bake-off where the winner’s doughnut will be granted limited edition status in the Dunkin locations around the country.

Corporate Social Media Case Study: Southwest Airlines

To celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week, Southwest Airlines hosted a series of contests on Twitter for a pair of free roundtrip tickets and two nights at an MGM Property in Las Vegas. Each day, followers were asked to submit a photo of a specific travel or tourism-related picture with the hashtag #SWAPhoto. One contest, for example, asked followers to submit a picture of them wearing a fanny pack, and also included a link to the contest rules in the same tweet. A winner was selected in about five minutes.

To ensure all photos submitted were original, Southwest checked popular photo sites like Flickr and Google Images for fake or copied entries.
