Corporate Social Media Case Study: Mayo Clinic

Through their Sharing Mayo Clinic blog, the Minnesota-based health care provider offers a regular dose of inspirational stories and videos from current and former Mayo Clinic patients — as well as behind-the-scenes stories from Mayo’s medical team. The blog is designed to provide a virtual place for the Mayo community to connect, and also supplements Mayo’s patient newsletter of the same name.

Most of the stories are written in a first-person style and include pictures of the patient, with many posts drawing several comments. Among the more notable stories shared on the blog is that of an elderly couple playing the piano in Mayo’s atrium. The post included a video of the impromptu performance and, with the help of mass media attention, has drawn more than 5 million YouTube views.

Corporate Social Media Case Study: Mayo Clinic

Through a healthy mix of blogs, Twitter, and traditional media, Mayo Clinic used a bunch of tools to share the story of how Philadelphia Phillies outfieler Jayson Werth had his career saved by one of Mayo Clinic’s orthopedic surgeons.

Through a few initial blog posts and video interviews with Jayson, Mayo Clinic’s Syndication and Social Media Manager, Lee Aase, built a story that caught the eye of USA Today editors. Not only did the mainstream publication run Jayson’s story, but they also worked with Lee to share content from a Twitter chat Mayo Clinic hosted for everyone to learn more about wrist injuries similar to Jayson’s.

Lee’s presentation dives into how they got their start in Twitter and some changes they made to dramatically increase their follower count, details of their new project to make what was formerly a local-only radio program hosted by a Mayo Clinic MD nationally available via podcasts, and the story of a video Lee posted on the Sharing Mayo Clinic blog that now has more than 4.3 million views.
